Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast
July 3, 2025Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast is a beloved old-school American breakfast dish featuring thin slices of dried beef served in a creamy white gravy, spooned generously over crispy toast. Simple, salty, and satisfying — it’s a warm, nostalgic bite that has stood the test of time.
Ingredients:
For the Cream Sauce:
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups whole milk
A pinch of salt (optional – beef is already salty)
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
For the Beef & Toast:
4–5 oz (120–150 g) chipped beef (or thinly sliced dried beef or deli beef)
4–6 slices of toasted bread (white or rustic)
Instructions:
Make the Cream Sauce:
In a medium skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.
Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a light golden roux.
Add the Milk:
Gradually whisk in the milk to avoid lumps.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens (about 4–5 minutes).
Add the Beef:
If using jarred or packaged chipped beef, briefly rinse under warm water to reduce excess salt.
Chop the beef into bite-sized strips and stir it into the sauce.
Let simmer for 2–3 minutes until heated through and well combined.
Serve:
Toast the bread to your liking.
Spoon the creamed beef generously over the toast and serve immediately.
Optional: top with a sprinkle of parsley or paprika for color.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve with scrambled or fried eggs for a heartier breakfast.
Pair with a strong cup of black coffee or chilled orange juice.
For added texture, sprinkle with crispy onions or fresh herbs.
Tips for Success:
Don’t skip stirring while the sauce thickens — it can easily stick to the bottom.
Chipped beef can be substituted with deli-style roast beef, pastrami, or cooked ham.
Add a splash of heavy cream for a richer texture.
