Fried Green Tomatoes
June 27, 2025Here’s a classic Southern Fried Green Tomatoes recipe — crispy, tangy, and totally addictive! Perfect as an appetizer, snack, or side dish.
Ingredients:
3–4 medium green tomatoes (firm and unripe)
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk if needed)
½ cup cornmeal
½ cup plain breadcrumbs or panko
¼ tsp paprika (optional)
Vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions:
Prep the tomatoes:
Slice tomatoes into ¼-inch thick slices. Lay them on paper towels and sprinkle with salt. Let sit for 10–15 minutes to draw out moisture.
Set up your dredging station:
Bowl 1: Flour, black pepper, and a pinch of salt.
Bowl 2: Beaten eggs and buttermilk.
Bowl 3: Mix of cornmeal, breadcrumbs, and paprika.
Dredge each tomato slice:
Coat in flour (shake off excess)
Dip into the egg mixture
Press into the cornmeal/breadcrumb mixture until fully coated
Heat oil in a large skillet (cast iron preferred) over medium heat until hot (350°F / 175°C if using a thermometer).
Fry in batches:
Cook each side for about 2–3 minutes or until golden brown. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
Drain on paper towels and lightly salt while hot.
Serving Ideas
Serve with remoulade, ranch, spicy mayo, or comeback sauce
Top with a bit of crumbled bacon or goat cheese for a twist
Great on burgers or BLTs!
