Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers
February 21, 2025Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers are incredibly easy to make and insanely delicious. The key to making these mouth-watering and flavorful burgers featured in Cooks Country is to smash thinly sliced onions into the ground beef before cooking. The result is golden caramelized onions embedded in a perfectly cooked burger!
Ingredients:
1 large white onion, thinly sliced
1 pound ground beef (preferably 80/20 blend)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
4 slices American cheese
4 hamburger buns, toasted
Optional toppings: mustard, pickles
Instructions:
Prepare the Onions:
Thinly slice the large white onion into approximately 1/8-inch thick rings. Season with a pinch of salt and let them sit for about 10 minutes to soften slightly.
Form the Beef Patties:
Divide the ground beef into four equal portions, shaping each into a ball. Season each ball generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Combine Beef and Onions:
On a flat surface, place a portion of the sliced onions and press a beef ball onto them, flattening it into a thin patty with the onions embedded. Repeat for all portions.
Cook the Patties:
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the patties, onion side down. Cook until the onions are deeply caramelized, about 2-3 minutes. Flip the patties and cook the other side until browned, approximately 2 minutes more.
Add Cheese:
Place a slice of American cheese on each patty. Cover the skillet briefly to melt the cheese, about 30 seconds.
Assemble the Burgers:
Place each patty on a toasted hamburger bun. Add optional toppings like mustard and pickles if desired.
Serve immediately and enjoy!
